With the New Year quickly approaching, many of us make resolutions to change things in our lives. These changes are about unwanted habits or patterns that we repeat over and over. Habits and patterns are reactions not responses. Reactions are automatic behaviors that are done without thinking about them. ie: hitting a light switch when you walk into your home, you don't have to think where it is, after turning it on many times before, you just reach out and do it. Responses are a process that requires sending a thought through the system, just like when you walk into a different home and try to turn on a light.
It's about being more conscious, awake, aware.
So how do you change a habit? 28 seems to be a magic number for that. If you do something 28 days in a row, or 28 times, it will form a habit. Most times to make a change you not only need to do something new 28 times, but you usually need to not do something 28 times as well. Be conscious, find the correlations to the habit you want to break or replace, and make a decision about it (respond) instead of just reacting to the situation as usual.
If you think you are pretty aware most of the time, just try doing the ordinary differently. Put your pants on differently, instead of starting with the right leg, put the left leg in first, same with socks and shoes. Open the door with the opposite hand, and then turn on the light with the opposite hand. Brush your teeth starting is a different spot, maybe the back instead of the front - you get the point! Try doing lots of little things differently and watch how it will filter through everything else you do, along with those habits you want to change.
Have fun making this year's resolutions actually happen!
